Social Media in Calgary: A Fad?

(more…)

@kevinhayesca is my name

As we finish the first month of 2010, you cannot avoid the hype that is around social media in Calgary, and using the internet as a tool to market your business. I was at a fundraiser for Haiti last week, http://www.yyc4hait.com, and instead of name tags with your name on it, everyone had their Twitter handle on their name tag. This is called a Tweetup. Welcome to the revolution!!! Personally, I had met more people there that I knew before hand only because we follow eachother on Twitter. @mediapirate & @ispeakcanadian & @calgaryrealtor are some examples. #yyc4haiti @ Flames Central. Very cool event. Tons fo great people involved. Awesome marketing. All around success. (more…)

Come Work For Us: We Are Nice

The other day I was driving to the my Gym, and I saw an advertisement for employment at a Mr. Sub. The advertisement said “Come Work For Us: We Are Nice. Free Subs”. There was an energy about the ad that made me believe that these guys were probably genuinely nice. They also stated that employees could eat for free. 2 great qualities in any job a person takes…I almost applied myself.

Who is their target demographic? 16-25 year olds, students, part time workers, and people looking to earn some extra cash.

Could they have implemented a social media marketing in Calgary to reach more of audience and hire good employees?

Yes, think Social Media for recruiting.

Here is what I would have started with as a franchisee owner of Mr. Submarine:

1. Blog: Develop a blog for the Mr. Sub current employees. Poston that blog the most wildest creations that the employees have made with their “Free Sub” benefit. Have 2 subs a week posted.

Some of the reasons why this might work: To show you are fun, show you bond with your employees, develop new business by people not searching for work, give some recognition to current employees.

2. Facebook: Create a facebook fan page that has promotes fun and affordability and a good work environment, and give a away a free sub to the first 50 Calgary Social Media visitors who become fans. Post pics of people having fun at work and doing fun things while working.

Some of the reasons why this might

Identify Yourself – by David A. West

I recently read the following article from a great business mind in Calgary, David West from eKzact Solutions “Would you do business with a person who didn’t tell you their name or hand you a business card when you met them? Would you consider requesting a proposal from an online service that does not include a phone number, contact form, or address on their website? It is not difficult to find websites on the internet where there is no information about the owners or key stakeholders. Does your website have your phone number on the home page? How about a page that has information about your company directors? A detailed contact page is important – it certainly would encourage me to give you a call. The Social aspects of the Social Networking craze that is sweeping the internet has to have an impact on how you write for your marketing website. Earn some trust by providing good information, make a clear call to action, and identify yourself. The days of doing business with corporations are slipping away… people want to do business with people. If your marketing website is more than a few years old, it will be missing key elements that a modern website should include. It may be time for a website review with an Internet Consultant.” (more…)
